Several of the neighborhood associations to the south of us have invited us to participate in a 3-session conversation with our mayoral candidates. Immediately below is an invitation to the first session with Charlie Hales on November 16th. Please invite your friends and neighbors.

First Town Hall with a Mayoral Candidate
Wednesday, Nov. 16, 7:00 PM
Vollum Lounge, at Reed College, at 3203 SE Woodstock

Dear neighbors:

For the past several years, city hall has turned an increasingly deaf ear
to local concerns and issues. Critical topics like the increasing diesel
emissions in the midst of our neighborhoods, decreased city services, and
failing infrastructure have been given second priority to pie in the sky
expenditures that would seem to have little immediate benefit. Since our
neighborhood pays high taxes, has a very high voter participation rate by
Portland’s standards, and makes many contributions to the city in our jobs
and as volunteers, this indifference to our concerns is increasingly
puzzling.

The Sellwood Moreland, Reedway, Hosford Abernety, and Eastmoreland
neighborhoods, in conjunction with the Reed College students (one of the
largest single blocks of voters in Portland) are sponsoring town hall
sessions for the three mayoral candidates in November, December, and
February. The first town hall meeting will be at the Vollum Lounge, at
Reed College, at 3203 SE Woodstock, at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 16th.

This will be a town hall meeting focused on southeast Portland. We are
planning to ask hard questions about police, sewer, parks, and
transportation services. The unilateral placement of cell towers in
homeowner’s front lawns, and the dramatic increase in noise and pollution
from the Brooklyn Rail Yards.

This session will concentrate on local issues:
How will established southeast neighborhoods be protected against development
that imperils their character and livability?

Where is the long promised community center at the Washington/Monroe high
school?

What will the new mayor do to address the increasing noise and pollution

at the Union Pacific Rail Yard in Brooklyn?

What is being done on the Sellwood Bridge and the poorly designed Bybee
Light Rain station?

Will the city protect homeowners from cell tower placement in their
front yards?

How can the City better involve its neighborhoods as if faces tight
budgets and hard choices?

If we expect to live in a city where City Hall recognizes our interests
and not just those of special interests we need to speak out. This is your
chance to test the candidates commitment to inner southeast Portland.

If you can, be sure to pass this on to any neighbors you may know who may be affected.

Abernethy Elementary School
4th Annual Tour de Ladd
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011
9:15 – 12:00 p.m.

There will be important restrictions on parking and driving on the Tour course before and during the event to meet these safety needs. Please help us keep your kids safe by doing the following:

Before the Event
1. Please avoid parking on or within any portion of the course during morning drop-off on the 6th. This includes Hickory Street and the portions of Orange and Tamarack Avenues north of Hickory, as well as the alley between Hickory and Tamarack. If you do park in any of these areas, it is extremely important that you move your car by 8:45 to help us ensure that the course is clear and the event can start on time at 9 a.m.

2. Please avoid parking on Birch Street between Elliott and Orange Avenues during morning drop-off. Given the proximity of this street to the course and that it is difficult to turn around on Birch, we also would like this street as clear of cars as possible by 8:45 a.m.

3. Please use Elliott Avenue to the greatest extent possible for drop-off. We know this requires a bit of extra walking but it will be extremely helpful us organize and conduct the event in a safe manner.

During the Event
1. Between, 9 a.m. and 12 noon, driving and parking on, through, or across any part of the course must be restricted while the kids are riding. Ideally, we do not want anyone on the course during this entire time. So if you can avoid driving or parking on the course during that period, it would be greatly appreciated. If you are just traveling through the area, please use an alternate route. If you are traveling to someplace within the course area, it would be great if you could park outside the area and walk to your destination.

2. If you absolutely have to drive on or within the course between 9 and 12, we will be asking you to wait until there is a break between waves of riders. Your cooperation with volunteers who will be staffing barricades at entrances to the course will be greatly appreciated. Volunteers will have explicit instructions about how to access the course safely.

If you have questions about any of these requests, please contact JJ Heldmann (503-490-8220). Thank you very much for your cooperation and support in making this a fun and safe event!

Here is information on an upcoming service project PF&R is sponsoring for 9/11.

Portland Fire & Rescue has chosen to remember the lives of those lost, pay tribute to those who rose in service, and honor those who serve our country today by engaging in service and remembrance on September 11, 2011.

On September 11th, all 30 Portland Fire Stations will be open to the public. Community members are welcome to stop by their local Portland Fire Station between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm for a time of reflection and remembrance of the lives lost with our firefighters.

In the spirit of service, Portland Fire has selected a project – Visible Address Portland – that will benefit emergency responders and the Portland community. Visible addressing is vital to emergency responders’ ability to find homes quickly in an emergency. In case of a fire or medical emergency, seconds count. Many homes in Portland do not have visible addresses.

We invite individuals, families, schools, businesses, and organizations to join us in marking this historic day by participating in a service project that will help firefighters save lives. On September 11th, stop by any Portland Fire Station and pick up a “Visible Address Portland Kit”. Kits will contain door hangers to hang on front doors of homes canvassed by community members where there is no visible address, encouraging homeowners to take action and make their address visible.
