The Portland Plan: Historic Preservation’s Future
Saturday, February 12, 2011 10:00 am – Noon

All Tickets: $10

The past 18 months of the Portland Plan “update” have been loaded with meetings, forums, websites to monitor, and a crush of additional issues that have been added to the mix. Historic preservation has gotten rather buried and the topic has been quieter than it deserves—given that more than 60,000 of Portland’s buildings were constructed before 1930. This session will be a full update on the various components of the Portland Plan—what’s in play and what lies ahead. How can we influence and impact what the Plan update does for historic preservation?

Presenting from the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will be Steve Dotterer and Nicholas Starin—both are City Planners with long tenure at BPS, and have deep interest in historic preservation. BMF/AHC Executive Director Cathy Galbraith will present an update on the Cornerstones African American Buildings History inventory, and how growth, development, zoning and Portland Plan policies have impacted these important buildings.

If the Portland Plan is overwhelming to you and your neighborhood—and you care about community preservation—this program is for you.

Pre-registration is strongly suggested.
This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Sponsored by: Spirit Mountain Community Fund , Oregon Cultural Trust, and Multnomah County Cultural Coalition

They are being removed because they have Dutch Elm disease. There is another Dutch Elm hotspot in Ladd’s at Ladd & Lavender – another 6 are being removed there, and another 2 on Hemlock.

Below, for those who are interested, is some information about our elm trees:
These trees are about 100 years old and are young relative to their lifespan – American Elms reach maturity at about 150 years, and live to about 300 years. Here’s a link with more info about American Elms if you’re interested:
http://www3.northern.edu/natsource/TREESA1/Americ2.htm

Dutch Elm disease is very aggressive and has devestated many parts of the country by killing entire stands of elm trees (approx 77 million trees in the US). A lot of you know about this, but for those who don’t, we have an innoculation program – the neighborhood organization, Save Our Elms, has been innoculating the elms in Ladd’s for 15 years -about 1/3 of the trees are innoculated each year, so that all trees get innoculated once every 3 years. The fungicide that is injected is not a cure or total prevention – it basically slows the progression of the disease.

Other than the innoculations, the other things that help the trees are pruning (when dormant and with a permit) and checking the trees’ leaves for wilting. If you see wilting leaves at the tops/crowns of the trees, you should call the Urban Forestry Division at 503-823-4489.

There is a person with the Urban Forestry Division that serves solely as the Elm Monitor – it’s a seasonal position and the current person is Danielle Fuchs. If you have questions, her number is 503-823-8859.

Another good source of info is the Save Our Elms website www.saveourelms.org

Ladd’s Addition: A Walking Tour of One of America’s Great Places
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
6:30 pm–8:00 PM
Architectural Heritage Center Members: $13 General Public: $18

Prominent business and civic leader William S. Ladd designed the neighborhood that bears his name in 1891, but did not live to see any of the homes there constructed. This walking tour explores Ladd’s Addition, its importance in Portland history, and its connections to the City Beautiful movement. Enjoy a leisurely, early-evening stroll from the distinctive central green, to the formal rose gardens, tree-lined boulevards, American Elm trees, skinny lots and alleys.

Along the way, your guide, urban planner and historian Richard N. Ross, AICP will reveal why Ladd’s Addition is a national and regional icon for livable communities. You’ll also learn how this leafy enclave of early 20th century homes, churches, and businesses has repeatedly overcome challenges and renewed itself.

This National Register Historic District is Oregon’s oldest planned community and in 2009 the American Planning Association honored it as one of America’s Great Places.

Meet your guide at SE Ladd Circle, in front of Palio Café, 1996 SE Ladd Ave.
The tour begins promptly at 6:30 pm.
Pre-registration is REQUIRED
Limited to 30 people.

Why not dust them off and share the oldies with your neighbors!

As part of this year’s Division/Clinton Street Fair (scheduled for Saturday, July 24), the Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood Association is holding a block party called “Roots of Our Neighborhood.” Our focus is on the agricultural and cultural heritage of families in our neighborhood.

We are currently searching for old family reels that you would like to share with us. Our deadline to submit is Sunday, June 20th, so that we can organize them into a presentation to play during the street fair later this summer.

For more information, please contact HAND Board Member Amy Lewin at 503-475-3010 or email: amy@handpdx.org. Or drop off your reels at 2424 SE 28th Place.

Mark your calendar for a fun neighborhood block party, the same day as the Division/Clinton Street Fair, Saturday, July 24.

Thanks to Southeast Uplift, HAND received a grant to hold a day-long festival called “Roots of Our Neighborhood.” The event will be held on SE 19th Ave. just off Division at the same site where HAND has submitted a permit request to the city of Portland’s Bureau of Transportation to build a park or public plaza.

We want to celebrate our neighborhood and the many ways this area has developed culturally and economically. From the families who helped settle here over the last century, to the present day movement of urban sustainability and creative arts, everyone is invited to take part.

If you have ideas or ways you or your business would like to be involved contact board member Amy Lewin, amy@handpdx.org or call 503-475-3010.

CURRENT NEEDS: Local bands or musicians wanting a place to perform! We are hoping to set up a stage and some live music for the early afternoon and early evening of July. 24th. Sign your group up now!

Pocket Park/Plaza Project
Speaking of HAND’s park efforts, did you know that our neighborhood is identified in the City’s 20-year plan as parks deficient? Did you know that there’s a strip of land the city owns that could be used to add a little green to our neighborhood?

Several years ago, neighbors realized that SE 19th Ave. just off of SE Division was owned outright by the city as part of a 1902 “quit-claim” deed from the estate of Oregon pioneer Mary Tibbetts.

Now there’s a group of HAND volunteers working to find a way to utilize this piece of pavement and turn it into something green we could all use. Find out more about our project, or get involved by visiting HAND’s Pocket Park page.
